- I must say, I envy my son’s natural ability to not worry about his future. I, on the other hand, am manic about it.
My son, Alex, was suspected of having autism in February of 2006, when he was a little over 3 ½ years old. Since then, not a day goes by where I don’t feel a bit under “normal” myself.
There’s a constant driving pressure to assure his life will be fulfilling in the years to come; that his brain pathways are connecting properly (and I’m no neurologist!). Am I doing enough, everything, always?. Do I need to fight harder? Do I need to “relax” more? Am I, on occasion, a total wimp?
I was pushed into an arena I knew nothing about. I’ve prayed, researched, questioned and coordinated therapies (for him and me), M.I.N.D. institute studies, play dates, playgroups, speech therapy, OT, RDI, APE and XYZ. I’ve survived the emotional stress of IEP’s and had to be more assertive and proactive than I ever thought possible.
As time passes, I’m reminded that Alex, the boy I fell in love with the moment I saw him, is who he is. He’s our child; he’s our Alex – quirky behaviors and all.
Alex is getting better! There’s hope. There’s help.
